As part of the Teachers Village master plan in Newark's downtown district south of Market Street, Building 08 is a 7-story mixed use tower with ground floor retail and apartments above. The existing Calumet Building has long been the tallest icon in the neighborhood, but has to be demolished unfortunately for structural reasons. To exemplify its glory days, Building 08 is designed to bring back the proportions of the historic building. Extending 250' long in a narrow street, its materiality and massing is carefully chosen to break down the scale. The white precast frame replicates the original tera cotta bays, while the dark grey brick veneer brings the building down to a townhouse scale. The result is a pedestrian friendly and lively urban area with new businesses and activities for teachers and students in the development.
